Ordinary People

Early on there was the fence post. Then came the gossip bench.  The Coffee Klatch followed.  All were meeting points for ordinary people to talk to other ordinary people to make sense of things going on in their worlds.  Some were gatherings of friends.  Some strangers.  Why talk to strangers?  Because sometimes it is easier to talk to people you do not know, have never seen and will never see.  That anonymity affords a layer of protection for a level of honesty often avoided with those in your life.  Particularly if you’re discussing delicate topics like family secrets.

FAMILY SECRETS ARE…

CHALLENGES AND BLESSINGS

Secrets are always a burden.  The person who shares a secret then wonders if the confidence has been or will be shared.  The person who is told a secret then faces the dilemma of keeping the confidence or breaking it.  That isn’t a challenge if the secret isn’t one that could have serious repercussions or consequences.  But what if it does–or worse, it could?  That is when the secret goes from blessing to challenge.  And when the dilemma hits both the teller of the secret and the keeper of the secret full force.

FAMILY SECRETS

WE TELL

Everyday life issues.  The little family secrets can drive us up the wall, and often they are the very things we need to talk about and yet aren’t free to talk about at home without causing ourselves more trouble with our family members.  We want to work through  things—and women often do that by talking about those things and reasoning their way to solutions.  We don’t want to hurt feelings, make family members feel we’re judging or blaming them.  We don’t want to deal with their feelings at the moment, we want to deal with our own.  No judgment. No hiding to spare ourselves retribution from family members. No sparking a familial war.  Just empathy.

FAMILY SECRETS

WE KEEP

Family Secrets we never share.  The ones we don’t want to think about but can’t stop thinking about.  The ones that create anxiety and break our hearts, trouble our minds.  Embarrass us, or make us feel ashamed—whether or not we had any control, the secret is ours or another family member’s.

FAMILY SECRETS

MIND WHISPERS

What we don’t know but we suspect.  These little voices or instinctive nudges, those funny feelings that niggle and nag, warning us that something isn’t right.  Something is off.  Our mind whispers the warnings and then challenges them, says we’re making too much of things—and we might be.  A war within ensues.  Is everything fine, or falling apart?  Our imagination leaps into Overdrive.  But are our concerns based in fact or fear?  We need to discuss this to figure it out, but we don’t want anyone to know about it!  If true, it is humiliating, degrading, upsetting.  It’s dark and angry and twisted.  It’s . . . broken.  And if it’s not true, then what?  What if we’re wrong…?
