Every person can be classified in a multitude of ways. We have personal identifiers, familial identifiers, professional ones. We’re identified by our activities, our associations, our thoughts and beliefs, our attitudes and even by our skin. It takes all those parts of us–every sliver–to make us the melting pot we are.
So it is with people, communities, our nation.

It sounds so simple. Listen. But often we listen and don’t hear. Often we listen with an ear toward how what we’re hearing impacts us. We need to practice hearing for the sake of the person speaking to be heard.
If you want to be heard, first learn to listen.
